How to Choose the Right Location for Beautiful Portraits

Choosing the right setting for your photo session can make a meaningful difference in the final images. The location helps shape the overall feeling of your portraits, supports your style, and creates a more comfortable experience from start to finish.

At Sara Hunt Photography in Montgomery, Texas, I help clients think through the details that matter most so we can create images that feel polished, timeless, and true to you.

Start with the style you want

Before selecting a location, consider the overall look you want your photos to have. A clean, natural setting can create a soft and timeless feel, while a more refined location may add elegance and structure. If you love bright, bold, colorful imagery with a fine art approach, the setting should complement that vision rather than compete with it.

Think about light and time of day

Light plays a major role in how your portraits look and feel. Open shade, soft natural light, and carefully chosen outdoor spaces often help create a flattering, polished result. The right time of day can also make a location feel more inviting and help everything come together beautifully.  This is why most of my outdoor sessions are done close to sunset or within the "golden hour".

Choose a place that feels comfortable

The best locations are not only beautiful, but also practical for you and your family. A spot that feels easy to get to, offers room to move, and supports a relaxed session can help everyone feel more at ease. When you are comfortable, your images naturally reflect that calm and confidence.

Consider how the location will age over time

When you invest in professional photography, you want images that still feel meaningful years from now. That is why it is important to choose a location with lasting appeal. Classic, well-maintained settings tend to pair well with luxury portraiture and provide a beautiful backdrop without distracting from the people in the frame.

Let your photographer help guide the decision

One of the benefits of working with an experienced photographer is having support in selecting a location that fits your session goals. I am always happy to help clients narrow down options and choose a setting that aligns with their vision, wardrobe, and final artwork goals.

Here are some of my favorite locations that I have used over the years.  These help provide clients with some guidance on what type of location they might like best for their photoshoot.  Locations range from areas all across the greater Houston area including Montgomery, The Woodlands, Tomball, Magnolia, Kingwood, Angleton, Katy, Humble and even Galveston, Texas.

*Certain locations may require a travel or artistic fee.

The Beach

Fine Art Beach sessions are done in Galveston, Texas meeting 30-45 min prior to sunset. These require an additional creative fee of $200 which will be due the day of your session.

Helpful considerations for selecting a photography session location in Montgomery, Texas.

Urban City Backdrops

If you want an urban feel for your photography session, the city can provide a beautiful backdrop. The tall buildings create open shade that works well for portraits, especially in the early morning when the light is soft and flattering. This setting is ideal for a polished, fine art look with a modern edge.  Sessions are done in Downtown Houston meeting in the early mornings.

Oyster Creek Park

Located in Sugar Land, Texas this park has a lot to offer...bridges, trees, fountains, manmade creek. It's so gorgeous and perfect for any type of session.

The Kingwood Bridge

Unique rustic bridge located in Kingwood, Tx.

The Woodlands Forest

Filled with gorgeous tall trees and stunning golden light, this wooded location is perfect for fall or spring sessions.

Mercer Botanical Gardens

Located in Humble, Tx this is another great option offering stone archways, white columns, trees, flowers (in the spring) and nature.

The Angleton Farmhouse

Gorgeous property in Angleton, Tx that offers a stunning glass house, tree swings, front porch and even a couple horses may make an appearance in the background during your session. Travel/location fee of $200.

The Silos

Located in Katy, Tx this location is great if you're wanting a rustic type feel

Montgomery Gardens

Beautiful park in Historic Montgomery filled with nature, bridges, rose bushes (seasonal) and a small waterfall.

Sara's Outdoor Montgomery Studio

Just steps from Sara's Montgomery studio is a beautiful little area with lots of trees, rustic wooden fence and gorgeous golden light making a perfect spot for capturing photos.  The colors in the fall are breathtaking!  This location is perfect during the spring, summer and fall months when the leaves are still on the trees.

The Woodlands Park

Cute little park near Woodlands Mall filled with trees, bridges and a small waterfall

The Carnival

If you are looking for a fun, colorful setting then the carnival is the place to be!  We would meet at Galveston Pleasure Pier or at an actual carnival (these are limited and only available when the carnival is in town).  Pleasure pier sessions are only done during the summer months when the pier is open on weekdays.  Carnival sessions require an additional creative fee of $200 which will be due the day of your session.

Texas Bluebonnets

There's nothing more traditional than photographs in the bluebonnets.  These are a client favorite and make beautiful family portraits.  Bluebonnet season is typically between mid March to early April.  My go to location is usually in the Brenham, Texas area, however occasionally we can find a spot in Houston.  Additional fees may apply depending on the location.

Outdoor Christmas:  The Woodlands

There are some amazing outdoor locations around Houston that offer a unique, Christmasy vibe.  These are held once the holiday decor is up so these are done mid to late November and require a fast turnaround so the images are delivered in time for the holidays. Sessions require a $200 artistic fee.  Final images will be delivered early December.
